Dr. Doug Lowy on the Future of Cancer Research

Dr. Doug Lowy serves as Deputy Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and conducts research as Chief of the Laboratory of Cellular Oncology in the Center for Cancer Research.  He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and trained in internal medicine at Stanford University as well as dermatology at Yale University.

Dr. Lowy, in collaboration with Dr. John Schiller, has been awarded the 2018 Szent-Györgyi prize for Progress in Cancer Research for their development of a preventive vaccine for human papilloma virus, which is the leading cause of cervical cancer cases. Their discoveries support all currently administered HPV vaccines globally. Dr. Lowy’s research at NCI includes the current methods of screening and detection for cervical cancer around the world. He believes the work conducted by himself and his colleagues at NCI will dramatically change the current problems with cost, access, and accuracy and will ultimately lead to high quality, cost effective cervical cancer screening for women in low income regions.

See why Dr. Lowy thinks that the problems with cancer research are far from being solved.
