This month marks National Book Lovers Day on August 9th and National Nonprofit Day on August 17th. To honor these days, Nixie Publishing and author LA Smith are partnering with the National Foundation for Cancer Research to raise awareness on environmental causes of cancer and the importance of cancer research. Author LA Smith says “There is a real synergy between themes explored in my book Fukushima on the Hudson and the NFCR mission to find a cure for all cancers.”
A few years ago, I was thumbing through a magazine when I came across an article that blew me away. It told the story of two women from the same small town who, as young girls, had gone to the same summer camp. They relocated to different parts of the country, but reconnected decades later and found they were both suffering from the same type of cancer. And they weren’t the only ones who were sick. Other campers had already died. Eventually, these women discovered that the summer camp they attended was heavily contaminated with illegally dumped toxic and radiotoxic chemicals. So I started wondering: How many other stories are out there like this one? And how many cancers are directly linked to human-made toxic and radiotoxic chemicals?
These questions inspired me to write Fukushima on the Hudson, fictional eco-political thriller based on a real-life threat to the United States. Today courageous scientists and researchers around the world are helping us better understand the impact radiotoxic and toxic chemicals have on our environment — and on our health.
